Naked attraction nonsense

I just watched Channel 4’s new show “Naked Attraction” and I’m literally agog at its madness.

I for one love a naked body; men, women, fat, thin, tall, short, able bodied, disabled, whatever the body, I think they’re all glorious. I just cannot quite get my head around the idea of seeing a person naked from the feet up and then dismissing a body at a time based on what they look like naked alone on whether you’d date them.

Yes, I use Tinder and swipe merely on someone’s appearance, but frankly if you’re going to sleep with someone (I’m not looking for love), you need to be attracted to them. To me, that starts with the face. The rest such as sexual chemistry comes later. You may find a certain body type more attractive than others, but what they look like without their clothes on is of little consequence.

To me the show perpetuates the social pressures that people already put on their bodies. Whether it is penis size, having perfect abs, pert boobs or a firm bum. What does it matter? Bodies don’t stay the same. They change with age, illness, pregnancy, so if you want to date someone it should be for more than what they look like naked.

The second ‘chooser’ woman sent home the largest woman first after seeing a group of men and woman from below the waist only after saying she was just a bit too curvy. After she was revealed she said “uh she’s got a gorgeous face!” How is this not just perpetuating that there is such negativity towards fat and plus size people? She rejected her purely because she had a slight swell to her stomach and chunky thighs, whereas the other women were thinner. She was a beautiful woman. She had done this despite saying her type in women was big busted and curvy bums.

After she rejected another man, he was clearly butt hurt and quickly retorted, “I didn’t like her legs anyway”. Well done on the body positive train, a great reason not to want to date someone, ass.

The only positives I really took from this were the fact the show was applauding the naked body however it looked. There was a woman who had a full bush and under arm hair, to which one of the men said (quite rightly) “it’s her body she can do what she wants with it”. At least this hopefully challenged some people’s views about what women can do with their bodies, as it seems to be a common belief that women should be entirely hairless.

Also, when the hell do we sit and look at our sexual partners and just judge their bodies? I know I never do. I am entirely comfortable in my own skin and would be seriously pissed off if when I was getting down and dirty or wandering around nude my sex partner was just looking and judging what they disliked. It’s all well and good to look and appreciate their body, but really, when do you ever just look think, “well I don’t like that”. You love the bits you love and how your two bodies work in sync together.

Am I entirely missing the point here?
